My portfolio explores my family, who are very important to me. The idea to shoot my family came from the idea to shoot cultural hairstyles. My family has a different hairstyle every time I visit and since I was going to visit them in Ohio that week, I thought that they would be the perfect subjects to shoot. I took a lot of portraits of them with different hairstyles which which led to me shooting their different outfits that embodies their personalities. My family lives far from me and I only visit once a year so I knew I had to expand on my original concept in a way that would still convey my passion of documentary photography. I expanded the concept to a immediate family, family friends, and very close friends. I enjoyed shooting this concentration because it was very sentimental for me. I had a close bond with my models because they were my family and they had trust in me. I was able to really capture their personalities and get them to come out of their shell in a way that a random photographer couldn’t. I hope that when people look at my portfolio, they are able to take away a sense of family and culture because although we’re a family, we don’t all look the same.
